Introduction
Deployment Waves are a feature used to group Business Units together in a logical manner. One Deployment Waves object can contain one or more Deployment Wave. Each Wave can contain one or more Entries, with each Entry containing a Business Unit and optionally, its child Business Units.
Their primary purpose is to enable the phased deployment of software, allowing for controlled and validated deployment of each Wave in turn. This is done with appropriate controls, verification, and notifications/approvals between phases.
Deployment Waves streamline the targeted deployment of software by facilitating logical grouping of Business Units and enabling phased deployment with regulated progression between Waves.
General Settings
The general settings section is for basic identifiable information, Name and Description.
Name: The name used to identify this Deployment Waves object.
Description: (Optional) A description used to describe the purpose or functionality of the Deployment Waves object.
Deployment Waves
In the Deployment Waves section, you can manage Waves and Wave Entries. Waves are containers for one or more Wave Entries, which in turn contain one or more Business Units.
To add a new Wave, simply click the Add Wave button.
When you create a new Wave, a corresponding section with an empty table of Wave Entries will be generated. To add a new entry to the Wave, select Create Wave Entry.
Selecting Create Wave Entry will bring up an overlay where you can choose a Business Unit and decide whether to include child Business Units.
To select a Business Unit, click the Browse button, which will open a Business Unit browser. From there, you can select the desired Business Unit.
For the Include Child Business Units section there are a number of choices:
- This business unit - This will include devices in the selected business unit only
- This business unit and all direct and indirect children - This will include devices in the selected business unit and all business units that are children of this business unit, or children of children recursively.
- All direct and indirect children - This will include only devices in direct child Business Units of the selected Business Unit (non-recursively)
- All 2nd level children - This will include only devices in Business Units at the 2nd level of the tree (i.e. direct children of the selected Business Unit)
- All 3rd level children - This will include only devices in Business Units at the 3rd level of the tree (i.e. children of the 2nd level)
- All 4th level children - This will include only devices in Business Units at the 4th level of the tree (i.e. children of the 3rd level)
- All 5th level children - This will include only devices in Business Units at the 5th level of the tree (i.e. children of the 4th level)
The option to include child Business Units allows for logical arrangement of Business Unit trees based on various criteria such as geography, region, cost centre, function, etc. This way, all desired devices can be targeted without having to add multiple Business Units to a single Wave.
To add other Business Units to the same Wave, repeat the process and select the desired Business Units. Similarly, to add more Deployment Waves, follow the initial process again.
Once all Deployment Waves and their corresponding Wave Entries have been added, simply click Save.
